Article suggests that Facebook has had a tough time in Japan because it refuses to let people participate anonymously. Mixi, vastly more popular, is highly private and users report using it very differently than US social networks – far more interaction with people they don't know offline, not a replication of online social networks.
The article about the future of Facebook is very troubling. I have a very diverse group of friends, in terms of age, gender, sexuality, race, and their location around the world. I love it when they post stuff I wasn’t previously aware of, but it also worries me how often we’re posting and reposting iterations of the same themes, despite our apparent diversity. In a business model where my friends’ interests hone the relevance of my search results, the serendipity-producing diversity might be seen by Facebook as a liability and something to discourage.
