re: the Taliban shutting down cell service at night, it makes sense for them for a few reasons:
a) shows their power – they made a threat, carried it out, and cell companies complied with Taliban wishes.
b) only shut down at night – the Taliban can’t execute operations nearly as well as NATO and the Afghan govt can at night because they don’t have night vision, eyes in the sky, and the other stuff that allows forces to conduct nighttime operations. So they get to keep the cell networks up during the day when they are useful to them, and shut them down when they aren’t useful.
c) the Taliban reportedly has their own small pirated cell networks that they can use if necessary in addition to radios.
