Amy Gahran kindly riffs on some of my writings about overcoming homophily. Almost makes me want to dig into research on homophily and serendipity again… :-)

A lovely video essay about a college clasmate of mine, Charlie Buckholtz, and his lifelong friendship with Sedar Chapelle, a friendship that’s crossed racial, cultural and religious lines.
Hey Ethan — homophily and serendipity have come up as themes so often in my life and work I’m feeling driven to research them. Could you perhaps post some resources and observations so I’m not starting from scratch?

I agree with Amy. Your link pointed me to her great post on homophily, which then pointed me back to your own great December post. As a one-time generalist I felt like I was managing my homophily OK (even though I didn’t know the word yet), but career changes, life stages, I don’t know, have let me slip into a rut. After reading the two of you today I’m taking stock again, starting with my feed reader. Thanks.
Amy, thanks for this great question. I’m doing some research on homophily and serendipity myself and will try to post some links to academic and news articles in the next couple of days.
