Justin Mason has an excellent post today about phone hardware hacking in India. He points out that technology users in developing nations can’t reasonably expect to send their equipment back to manufacturers, so local geeks get smart about repairing and modifying hardware that manufacturers intended to be a black box. Hence, the phenomenon of cellphone repair stalls that can rebuild and customize cellphones at prices affordable to Indian users.
In my tired and stressed out state – frantically finishing chapters for the Worldchanging book and preparing for a trip to WSIS in Tunis – I managed to misinterpret a kind nod to this blog from Justin as an insult. Apologies, Justin – just goes to show I should stop reading my trackbacks and get back to work.
